Carmen

Published in the Revue des deux mondes; a fourth chapter on the Roma of Spain was added in 1846. Mérimée tells the story through a scholarly French narrator to whom Don José confesses in prison. The opera discards that frame, along with José's history as a murderer before he ever meets Carmen.
